California dental professionals with licenses expiring on or before July 31 have through Dec. 3 to complete required C.E., pass exams

June 08, 2021 1722

Quick Summary:

Specified licensed dental professionals now have an additional six months ― through Dec. 3, 2021 ― to complete the continuing education and take and pass the examinations required to renew their license.

The California Department of Consumer Affairs on June 3 temporarily waived license-renewal requirements for dental professionals in the state whose licenses expire between March 31, 2020, and July 31, 2021. Those licensed dental professionals now have an additional six months ― through Dec. 3 ― to complete the continuing education and take and pass the examinations required to renew their license.

The state-of-emergency order issued by the Newsom administration in March 2020 granted the DCA the authority to waive statutory or regulatory professional licensing requirements as part of the state’s response to the COVID-19 pandemic.

CDA has continually and successfully advocated for waivers for dentists, dental professionals and dental students who were experiencing, and continue to experience, challenges completing C.E. and taking examinations due to the cancellation of in-person courses, training and exams.

Earlier waivers pertaining to license renewal requirements issued in October and December 2020 and February and March 2021 have been rescinded and replaced by this newest waiver.

The DCA’s temporary waiver does not relieve licensed dental professionals from complying with any other renewal requirements, including completing and submitting the required renewal forms or fees to the Dental Board of California or any other governing licensing agency.

Additionally, the waivers do not apply to C.E., training and examinations required as part of any disciplinary orders against a license.

RDAs, RDAEFs have additional time to complete exam requirements

The DCA on June 3 issued a second waiver that grants registered dental assistants and registered dental assistants in extended functions more time to complete their examination requirements if their applications are deemed abandoned between June 2 and Aug. 1. The CDA article explains the details.
